On the Way…

July 26, 2009

I am writing this on the M1 about 2 hours away from Potters Bar, it’s raining by you wouldn’t tell by the demeanor of the scouts. Everyone has been singing in the bus and looking forward to a hot shower.

We left the site in good time at about 1.30pm and had flag down with all the tents packed away (the rain gave way for this short period of time which was great). Spencer was the winner of the patrol competition and was awarded with the large peg which has been taken to every camp over the last 20 years.

All in all, spirits are high and we are looking forward to next year’s camp already which will be in Scotland.

Finally, thanks for tuning in to the blog it’s been great to read your comments out to the scouts and to give you the opportunity to have an insight into how we camp.

Your kids should be at the hut at around 9.30 :)

Keep an eye on 5pbscouts.co.uk where all the photos will be uploaded and of course keep an ear out for the film show in October.

Pony Trekking and Canoeing

July 25, 2009

Yesterday was the second of our divided activity days with every group rotating to have a go at either ghyll scrambling, canoeing, pony trekking or shopping. The night before we had a wide game where the objective was to take a spinning lighted object (to burn off the extra energy from all the sweets they have bought!)

Weather in the morning was wet but much improved by the time dinner was ready, which consisted of a cooking competition! – the delights of chillis with philadelphia cheese and pancakes without egg were enjoyed by the leaders judging. The night stayed fair and all the scouts sat round a small fire and sang some songs.

Tonight is our last night so we will be spending today clearing up the site, after taking a visit to the windermere air show followed by the obligatory fish and chips.

Thanks for all the comments, we have been reading them out at flag down, much to the embarassment of some!

Once again, thanks for tuning in so regularly, it’s quite tricky doing this on camp (power/connection/other jobs to do) but it allows me to skive from the washing up in the leaders tent,

Until tonight,

Yours in Scouting

The other day we all went on a very long and tiring hike. It took 2 days to complete our hike. The mountain seemed endless and it seemed like it would never end. But it did in the end. It was really windy and cold but it got warmer as we came down the mountain. When we were near the top we were like in the clouds and was really cool but it was scary when we looked out because all you could see was white cloud. You literately couldn’t see people within a meter in front of you. It was really nice to finally reach the camp site and set up our tent and eat our pot noodles. Yummmmmm. We had a lie in the next day and quite a long lie in and that was really nice. We didn’t get up un till 10am.

Gorge scrambling was so fun. We got jump out of a waterfall and jump off one as well. The water was really cold but we got used to it. Jumping on and off the rocks was really fun but you had to be careful you didn’t hurt your self because they were really slippery. The water was like crystal clear and was so tempting to drink it. But apparently there was wee in the water. Ewww. We had to wear these wet suits to keep us dry and warm. They were really tight and gave every one a wedgy. But gorge scrambling was really fun.

Back From the Hike!!

July 23, 2009

The overnight hike was a big success, despite some cold we all managed to climb up and back down the weatherman mountain fairly easily. We then pitched camp near a small mountain lake got our little stoves going and had army rations and pot noodle for dinner (which went down very well.)

Everyone is a bit tired and wet now so we will spend the rest of the day recovering.

Photos should be appearing tonight if we can get sufficient connection at the campsite. At the moment we are relaxing around Coniston as they have toilets which don’t creek when you sit on them!

For Now,

Wet but still smiling

July 21, 2009

Despite the weather, today saw the Scouts doing activities in the mess tent before lunch. We cooked centrally and all were kept out of the rain. The weather improved during the day.

We then went for a swim at Trout Beck Bridge near Windermere which gave the scouts a chance to catch a shower (other than that from the sky)

Tomorrow we will be setting off on our overnight hike during the late morning which will encompass walking up The Old Man of Coniston and returning on Thursday to the campsite.

Internet access can be a bit dodgy on the mountain, so don’t be alarmed if there isn’t a post tomorrow. The Scouts have now all gone to bed and the leaders are preparing the route for tomorrow.

Today I went to the local town – **conaston**, Went shopping and got lots of Kendal mint cake and coke. Had lunch in a games room. After lunch I went gryll scrambling and got very wet. My fav part of gryll scrabbling is when I jumped into the water and swam under the water climbed onto this rock and then I belly flopped into the water which was very cold. After I got back to the camp site and I had the job of laying the table but instead I kepted my seat worm whilst everyone else was cooking the spag bowl. My next job after dinner was to burn the rubbish but I got told of by John because I put a glass bottle on the fire and it went bang. Tonight before bed I’m going to eat lots of biscuits.

What I miss the most:

Is my DS with Sean the sheep which my mother got my for Christmas.

Activity Day

July 20, 2009

We are currently sitting in the minibus at the activity centre. Earlier today we split into 4 groups, one doing scrambling up waterfalls, another shopping in coniston, one pony trekking and canoeing. We were part od the first group to go ‘Ghyll Scrambling’, which basically entails getting very wet and trying to hauk yourself up the side of a waterfall. We then had some time in the games room in the activity centre playing table tennis and table football.

Off to coniston now!
